Apart from the fact that acne is a big problem itself, it
may also cause deep scars. Scars are left when the
person is suffering from a severe form of acne such as
Nodulo cystic.
It is
interesting how both psychologically and physically people have
difficult responses to acne scars. In some of them scars
heal easily and fast
while others can’t get rid of them at all. And while some think
scarring is normal others do everything possible to or
experience a reduction or remove even the
slightest of the scars.
Types of
scars and causes
Depending on
the shape of skin and
tissue, we have 2 categories of acne scars:
One type
consists of increased skin tissue, and the other is specified by
the decrease in tissue on the site of acne. The first type is
called Keloids and is wide spread in African-American nations while
the other one is called the ice-pick scar and is extremely
difficult to heal.
The types of
scars that are formed due to excessive amount of the cell substance
collagen of the Keloids have a small diameter – no more than 2
millimeters and are irregularly shaped, smooth and firm.
Although that
it is not absolutely proved, observations show that this type is
usually inherited because people who suffer from it are usually
related to others also having Keloid.
The other
type of scars which is caused by the loss of tissue is more common
compared to keloids. They resemble the scars left by chicken pox
and include depressed fibrotic scars, soft tissue scars and
ice-pick scars.
Ice-pick
scars which affect mainly the cheeks are small but with jagged
edges, steep, and therefore difficult to be healed or treated. When
these become larger and steeper, with edges becoming
sharp, "depressed fibrotic scars" is the name used by
specialists to describe them. And finally, soft scars which have
rolling edges that merge with the natural skin,
are small may be both superficial and deep. They can be
different in shape - either circular or linear.
Solutions
:
There is a
variety of solutions
ranging from skin creams,
home remedies for acne scars to laser treatment, skin graft, and
microdermabrasion. Also
some temporary filling agents like collagen might be used. Some of
the methods are quite complicated. Some treatment provide satisfied
results while others let people unsatisfied.
Success of a
scar treatment varies with the type of skin and each person. The
only way to know is to compare the skin before and after treatment.
For example,
the treatment used for deep ice-pick scars is punch grafting which
means cutting the scars and replacing them with skin graft taken
from behind the ear. Another technique is dermabrasion where the
normal skin is cut down and thus the scar remains the same but the
level of rest of the skin changes, making them shallower and
removing shadows.
Another method is laser treatment for which a
product, carbon
dioxide is used to remove skin very finely with minimum damage
to healthy tissue. There are also peeling treatments where
chemical products are
used to remove the epidermis. This treatment is helpful and may
clear shallow scars
left by acne rosacea and cystic acne.
